Our Mission

At Books4Kids Jamaica, we believe that taking the time to meet each child to give them their own book bag significantly increases their interest and enthusiasm for learning, and above all, shows them that they are important to us. With this simple gesture, we show that they matter, that going to school can be exciting and that we have faith in their academic abilities and their future. Even more importantly, equal access to the same books and materials helps to put all the children in the classroom on the same level footing. It gives all the students – regardless of the challenges their families may be facing – first class educational materials.

Eradicating Illiteracy

Eradicating illiteracy is a national objective in Jamaica. The Ministry of Education has implemented three programs designed to eradicate illiteracy among Jamaican children including the “Literacy 1-2-3 program”, which provides a curriculum and the necessary support materials for the three first grades. However, The Government of Jamaica does not supply books or educational materials to Kindergarten children.

The Books4Kids Jamaica book program fills a gap by providing books to children at an early age, helping them prepare for first grade.

The program collaborates with the Early Childhood Commission (ECC) of Jamaica to ensure that book selections follow curriculum guidelines that support the Governments “Literacy 1-2-3 program”.

The ECC has noted their appreciation to Books4Kids Jamaica for its contribution of much needed reading materials for all ages of the Early Childhood sector. As in previous years, Officers from the Early Childhood Commission were present at many schools to assist with the 2014 book distribution.

Government Support

Books4Kids Jamaica works with several entities of the Government of Jamaica to successfully execute each year’s book distribution.

– The Ministry of Education, Jamaica
– The Ministry of Finance, Jamaica
– The Jamaica Customs Department
– The Early Childhood Commission
– The Reading Program, Mobile Police Community Unit

“Thank you for your benevolence extended to the various schools in Western Jamaica, to enable them to return to school. It shows evidence of good corporate citizenship. I wish your Palmyra Foundation all the success.”

The Honourable Ronald Thwaites, former Minister of Education, Jamaica
